Title: Proving a dynamical BH in the historical X-ray transient GRS 1716-249

Abstract: Black-hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs) are essential to our understanding of extreme physics across the universe. They are, unfortunately, very scarce but we have developed a new (photometric) survey strategy aimed at discovering a hidden population in our Galaxy. A proof-of-concept and a feasibility test at faint magnitudes ($rsim22$) have been reported in two recent papers. Here we aim at presenting the first discovery of a dynamical BH (the historical X-ray transient GRS 1716-249) using such photometric technique. We propose to measure the orbital period of GRS 1716-249 by resolving the ellipsoidal modulation through SOAR r-band photometry. This will set the scale size of the binary which, combined with information on the velocity of the donor star (through recent WHT+ACAM observations with our calibrated narrow H$_{alpha}$ filters), will yield the (photometric) mass function in GRS 1716-249. With a quiescent magnitude $r=23$, this is arguably the only way to prove a dynamical BH in GRS 1716-249 (and in a large fraction of faint candidates), until a new generation of ELTs become operative.
