Title: SOAR TESS Survey: Characterization of TESS planets in multiple star systems

Abstract: In two years of speckle observations of planet candidate hosts, the SOAR TESS Survey has observed over a thousand systems and detected approximately two hundred tight binaries. In year 3 of its mission, TESS is returning to the South and will likely detect hundreds of more planetary candidates, each requiring high-resolution follow-up for confirmation and characterization. SOAR has proven uniquely suited to efficiently perform these observations. In addition, significantly fewer close companions to transiting planet-hosting stars were observed than expected based on field statistics, suggesting that planet formation and evolution are disrupted in the dynamically active environment. The mechanisms responsible are not understood: close binaries may inhibit planet growth by shortening disc mass and lifetime or eject planets via gravitational interactions. Studying the properties of close systems can provide constraints to test theoretical models. Continued monitoring of these systems can determine if the stars are bound or line-of-sight binaries, and determine their true orbital separation rather than the projected separation derived form the single-epoch discovery observation.
